At Selo, we believe that safety shouldn’t compromise design. Our riser doors have been engineered to be the most complete high-performance metal riser doors on the market and are perfect for concealing fire-rated riser doors, access panels, and internal doors in corridors, landings, and other access areas.
We offer a range of different finishes but a common questions we get asked is: Can I add timber panelling to the front of my riser door?”
Can I add timber panelling to the front of my riser door?
We advise not too, even with non-combustible panels. By adding timber panelling in the vicinity of a Quadra+, you are compromising the fire safety, due to the Quadra being uninsulated, heat is generated on the unexposed face, therefore any combustible material within the immediate vicinity of the riser door will be at risk of combustion, you cannot add timber panelling to the front or within the vicinity of an uninsulated door.
However, it is possible but difficult and can be achieved if designed by a suitable competent fire consultant and with a suitably integrated system design of walls, doors and building. The door, walls and buildings must meet the requirements of building control and building regulations. It is important to consider how far way the panelling is from the face of the door and how high up the riser door the panelling will go, as this will make a huge difference to the temperature the panelling is exposed to.
So, whilst timber panelling can’t be panels to the door or door frame, if you are running panelling across the face of the wall it needs to be a non-combustible panel in front of the door spanning the full width of the width of the door and frame either side before battens so there is no contact with the door set. Selo does not offer a tested timber or non-combustible panelling directly in front of a riser door so the door will need to be signed off from Building Control or the Building Safety Regulator requiring an approved assessment.
What are the alternatives?
However, other finishes for riser doors are available. The doors are powder coated to dead matt pure white as standard, but bespoke powder coating is available, as well as wallpapering if there is a suitable fire rating assessment.
Our Quadra riser door is fire rated up to EI120 and using the tested Nulfire system can be fitted to project into wall-lining systems.
