At Selo, we love to go above and beyond for our clients whether that’s support during a project, installation training, or educating the industry. It is important to us as we are always working to make our customers lives simpler and it is our #1 core value ‘keep it simple’. That is why we offer CPD’s to educate, empower and entertain your team!
The dedicated CPD for Selo is called ‘Getting it right Doors & Walls’, we also offer CPD’s for both Enigma Sliding Pocket Doors and Tempus. The information included in this CPD explores the requirements as a result of the latest Building Regulation, focusing on Fire Safety & Compliance.
The name of the CPD is Getting it right, so we share what you need to remember when installing a door into a wall, so you don’t get any problems later down the line. For example, this could be anything from the wrong door size or the door not being specified to correct standards which can make the building unsafe.
Some mains areas to focus on getting right include:
• Specifying Doors & Walls as a system
Getting the correct specifications for doors and walls as a system involves defining both functional and technical aspects to ensure they work correctly. This process includes a wide range of elements from materials (metal or steel), design (colours, what type of door and style) and sizes. Getting it right can be hard, but it is important to have these elements correct as the process will not be smooth.
• Common compliance pitfalls
When specifying and installing doors in a development, various compliance pitfalls can occur, so it is important to be aware of them. These can include incorrect fire rating, as some doors in certain areas require a fire-rated to comply with the building’s safety. Non-compliant door frames, these must also be appropriately rated to match, if they don’t match the compliance of the door will be wrong. Another common pitfall could be altering a fire-rated door by drilling holes, trimming, or adding incompatible hardware can void its certification. A key thing to remember is fire-rated doors must have certification labels clear as if not the door may not pass inspection.
• How to avoid site delays and reword
In construction, we understand that time is crucial, so putting things in place to avoid delays is important so the project runs smoothly. Some things to get right early on to try and avoid delays include comprehensive planning & scheduling so everyone who is involved is aware of the plan. To also make sure the plans are accurate and include detailed specifications. Delays often occur due to late delivery of materials. Identify long-lead items and order them early to ensure they are on-site when needed. By focusing on meticulous planning, effective communication, skilled labour, and constant monitoring, you can significantly reduce site delays and rework.
• Fire testing and assessments
What test standard (BS476 series or EN1634 series) the door has been tested to. Currently, both are acceptable standards in the UK although the BS476 standard is being withdrawn from building regulations as acceptable in a move away from national standards to the maintained European standards and change to more of a rule based, system of approval.
• New regulations and processes that will affect us.
It is always important, to keep up to date with any new regulations or processes that come out as it will affect how to specify doors and if you don’t comply with the new regulations, your door will not be compliant. The regulations have been put in place to keep the building as safe as possible. The recent report for Grenfell came out in September 2024, with recommendations to the construction industry on how to avoid this tragic event happening again. A few more reports/regulations to look out for in the coming year include the Hackitt report for high rise residential buildings and how FD rating will be removed and replaced with E. In the construction industry, it is crucial to be aware of new reports as this could affect a project you are working on.
In 2023, we completed over 100 CPDs to different practices and in 2024 we are hoping to beat that with only a few months left of the year. Some architects practice we have visited include: Make, Broadway Malyan, Ascot Design and Veretec. You could be next!
