Fire Door Safety Week returns from the 21st to the 25th of September 2026, now in its 13th year and organised by the British Woodworking Federation. The campaign’s purpose is simple but vital: to raise awareness of how fire doors protect people and property by containing fire and smoke, giving occupants time to escape. The ongoing knowledge gap
Research over the years has shown a consistent problem. Many people still can’t spot a faulty fire door, don’t know the difference between FD and EI ratings, or aren’t sure whether the door needs to be tested with the wall.
Smoke remains the biggest cause of fire deaths. That’s why proper seals, closers, and smoke control are just as important as the door itself. What actually makes a fire door work
A fire door is a system. The door, the frame, the ironmongery, the seals, and the wall all have to work together. Use the wrong hardware or fit it incorrectly, and the rating can be lost.
Regular inspection matters too. Check certification, gaps, seals, hinges, and whether the door still closes properly. A propped-open or damaged door is a risk waiting to happen.
Looking ahead
The industry is also moving. BS 476-22 is being phased out, with E-rated doors under EN standards becoming the future. Staying ahead of these changes helps keep buildings compliant and safe.
