Fire compliance came under greater scrutiny in 2024 which means it is more important than ever to understand the building regulations regarding fire protection performance. At Selo, we aim to follow best practice and help educate our customer to achieve a fire compliant door solution. All our products are developed with performance and compliance in mind, which is why we spent 1,936 minutes fire testing in 2024.

One of the most common problems contractors will come to us with is they have purchased a door that has passed a fire test for a particular standard but not with the ironmongery that has been fitted or into the wall it has been installed at site. This will incur additional costs to the developer and delay the project whilst the doors are changed.

To prevent this issue from happening, we strongly advise checking the Field of Application (FOA) report prior to specifying a door to ensure that the entire system is compliant. The FOA will tell you what standard the doorset was tested to and for how long, as well as the ironmongery and wall. When specifying a door for your project, it is important to consider the entire building as a system. We recommend reading the FIS Walls as a System guide, which our Technical Director contributed to, as a best practice guide.

It was announced in 2024 that all national standards have been removed from building regulations with regard to fire protection performance, so all of the parts of BS476 for both reaction and resistance to fire in approved document B have been removed. Only the EN standards can be used to define performance from the end of the 5-year coexistence period which is 2nd September 2029. Selo can help support you through this change.

Finding a trusted door manufacture is important to give you full transparency with test evidence, as well as have the expertise and experience to help advise on best-practice. Selo will always be up front with our test evidence, as well as any other documentation to give you confidence and make the specification process as easy as possible. You can see the full range of downloads here but please contact us if you require more information and our team will be more than happy to help.

You can count on Selo as a trusted door manufacturer and we will never walk away from a problem. In fact, we individually inspected over 3,000 riser doors for a client, as there was a ‘light-bleed’ between door and seals when looking from riser out with the doors closed.  The concern was related to whether the doors were still compliant from a smoke and acoustic rating if there is any gap.

Selo recently purchased a timber door manufacture to now offer the full range of doors with the same level of trust and quality you can expect from a Selo product. We now offer internal doors for projects, as well as timber doors available with rapid lead times for retrofit projects.

If you would like to understand more about fire protection performance and how to remain compliant or would like to speak to us about a Field of Application report for one of our product, please speak to us today.
